Description

Ophelia’s Turmoil is a OOAK necklace. This necklace is an attempt to do justice to the beautiful and haunting cabochon created by :iconsleetwealth:. Her work is mesmerizing to me and I can only hope to incorporate it in such a way that it may create a stir in others as well.

:iconellygator:’s contest was also an inspiration, as it drove me to finally create this project. The contest theme “Ancient Realms” brought me back to thinking of the time that Ophelia was depicted by Shakespeare and the beauty and sadness she represented. The details of the contest can be found in her journal here: [link]

This piece is very abstract in its symbolism perhaps, but this is as I intended…

The “green” side represents the tree from which Ophelia feel or threw herself from. The “blue” side represents the waters in which she drown. Both sides contain elements of the other to show how they existed in their natural harmony.

The “shimmerstone” (created by ~BrightCircle) represents the moon. It also represents the feminine. Ophelia was a mysterious character who was not fully understood. A lot of discussion/interpretation about her character exists. The feminine of the moon represents this. It also represents an human egg/fetus as some believe that Ophelia drowned herself while pregnant with her unborn child.

The central piece which hold that cabochon represents Ophelia. She is torn between two worlds the living and the dead, as shown in the two sides merging. Forever tangled just as much in the emotions of life as in the weeds that pulled her to her death.

It is said that Ophelia is depicted in white because she was a virgin. I choose white as the accent color for this reason. However, it is also said that she was “deflowered” and that this is why when she began to be depicted with flowers in the play, it was symbolic of how her virginity had been taken and the crazed behavior ensued as a reaction to her being rejected. Nothing in this piece is orderly or perfect to represent this chaos.
