I wanted to get a shot of his tail
from the front without being used as a closure.
The body is Peyote stitch. The fringe is both Looped and Stick style. The strap is Russian Spiral and was inspired by ~vampi's beautiful piece [link] This was my first attempt at this particular stitch and I have to say I found it to be a b**** to learn off of internet instructions. The tail of the dragon was extended using flat Peyote stitch. This was also a new style for me as I have never built off my main body before. I am not exactly happy with it, but I did it without a pattern and it was my first shot, so I am attempting to not be too critical. The tail wraps around to create a closure. The strap holding the tail down was done in Brick stitch and then attached to the main body. Materials included fairly inexpensive seed beads and nymo thread. If I would have know ahead of time how much time I was going to spend on this I would have used a higher quality of bead. I am still working on getting better quality photos of my beadwork. So please do not critique that part of the piece unless you have advise on how to improve. Comments
I like how you used the two different styles of fringe to great effect! The branched fringe works very well for the fire, as opposed to the loopy fringe, which is perfect for a backdrop.
Right now I'm reading a book with a baby dragon as a main character, so the timing of this piece is perfect! -- Medusa was beautiful Do you think it would be an appropriate book for a 12 year old? That may sound odd, but you said baby dragon...I read to my daughter every night even though she is 12. She has dsylexia and it is hard for her to read books for enjoyment. So, I like to read books that we are both interested in and we both like fantasy books. She is on a huge dragon kick right now. -- I can't understand how people do not see how they effect one another... Hmm. Robin McKinley's later books seem intended for older readers, not because of the content but the way the prose is constructed. I don't know your daughter's reading level but I'd say that a book of that level would likely be too dense and wandery for most 12-year-olds. But, (and correct me if I'm wrong; I have more experience with Downs children than dyslexic) it's my understanding that dyslexic people tend to be very bright.
I say, give it a shot! If it doesn't work out, she'd probably love Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Jane Yolen's Heart's Blood books, and I'm fairly sure Laurence Yep wrote a series of dragon books. Yolen edited an anthology of dragon short stories entitled 'Here There Be Dragons' too. -- Medusa was beautiful Thanks! I appreciate the suggestions. Right now we are reading a dragon series...can't remember which one, but one of the books is The Fire Within... When that series is done I will be looking for more.
A cool adolescent series (although I also enjoyed it) was the princess frog series...I just had to read those since I love frogs. Very cute. I think she is bright, it is just that it is very frustrating for her to take in written material because her mind doesn't interpret it corectly all the time. Still, I don't think she is quite up to adult level interest yet... -- I can't understand how people do not see how they effect one another... |
